Scholarship and Grant Award Process

 

The scholarship and tuition grant opportunities listed below are made available to help students aspire, advance and achieve in the classroom and beyond. Review the criteria for each scholarship and choose which scholarship(s) for which you would like to apply.

 

The scholarship and grant review committee is comprised of the principal and advancement directors for both high schools and the Catholic Secondary Schools business manager. The committee will review all applications in mid-April. Scholarship and grant award notifications will be mailed during the first week of May.

 

An application for download is provided with the description of each scholarship (below).  You may also contact the Guidance Office at (616) 233-5810 to receive a copy by mail. 

   

Minimum criteria for all scholarships:

ü  All applicants must be registered students

ü  A Private School Aid Service (PSAS) form must be completed and mailed by
March 1, 2012, directly to PSAS to qualify for the scholarships listed below unless otherwise noted in the scholarship criteria.

ü  Scholarship Applications must be completed and submitted with all required documentation by April 1 to be eligible. Scholarship applications are mailed directly to Catholic Secondary Schools (CSS).

ü  Student must maintain a passing cumulative GPA on the Catholic Central and West Catholic grading scale unless otherwise noted in the scholarship criteria

ü  Student must have a satisfactory discipline record

ü  Student must write a thank you letter acknowledging receipt of scholarship to CSS and the donor and mailed directly to CSS to be forwarded to the donor within 30 days of award notification.

ü  Please complete a Letter of Special Circumstances if applicable and send

directly to the CSS Business office along with the scholarship application. These

may be sent in for consideration of PSAS awards even if you are not applying for a

scholarship.

 

Several Scholarships have more specific criteria noted in the scholarship description and on the scholarship application. All scholarship applications are due by April 1 to be eligible for consideration.

 

PSAS Private School Aid Service Application

Please note that the scholarships listed require that you submit a Private School Aid Service (PSAS) form. The PSAS must be postmarked by March 1, 2012. Please make a copy of your PSAS and supporting documents for your records and send original application and supporting documents to PSAS at the address below. Pay attention to the "Avoiding the Most Common Errors" page included in the application.  Send completed application to:

Alan & Margaret Ryan Scholarship

·         Juniors, Scholarship available for Senior year only

·         Must demonstrate leadership in the community, school and church

·         Based on financial need

·         Minimum 3.0 GPA

·         Document volunteer activities

·         Have an openness to exploring Aquinas College for post-secondary education

Scholarship and Tuition Grant Opportunities

General Tuition Grant (PSAS)

·   Passing cumulative GPA

·   Based on financial need

·   Student must have a satisfactory discipline record

·   All active/registered Parishioners who apply for PSAS will be automatically

considered for the Bishop’s Scholarship Fund.  (Please be sure to indicate your

Parish Code and School Code on the PSAS form)

Am-O-Sy/St. John of Damascus Scholarship

·   Preference for students of Lebanese or Syrian descent

·   Preference shall be given to relatives of past members of the

   AM-O-SY Social Club

·   Based on financial need

·   Minimum of 3.0 GPA

·   Must perform community service in excess of the minimum hours required as

   stipulated in the Student Handbook

·   Renewable up to 3 years provided recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA

William and Karen Lawrence Family Scholarship

·   Freshmen

·   Special consideration for Holy Name of Jesus and St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary  

   School students

·   Based on financial need

·   Minimum 3.5 GPA from 8th grade academic year

·   Must submit one letter of recommendation (must not be from a family member)

Eugene “Sam” Kunst Endowed Memorial Scholarship

·   Freshmen

·   Must be from St. Francis Xavier Parish

·   Must be a male student

·   Based on financial need

·   Minimum 3.0 GPA

·   Renewable for three (3) years, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA

·   Freshmen

·   Not financially based

·   Interest in Fine Arts, especially Choir or Band

·   Involvement in extracurricular activities

·   Incoming Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors who transfer from a local public or private education institution

·   Based on financial need

·   Must participate in extracurricular activities

·   Scholarship is renewable up to 2 years provided the requirements & criteria are met

·   Juniors, Scholarship available for Senior year only

·   Based on financial need

·   Must provide proof of community service or extracurricular activity at CCHS

·   Must provide two (2) letters of recommendation:  one from a priest, teacher

   or CC faculty and the second must be from a classmate or peer

·   Must be in good standing with no current student or athletic probations

Saron Jenkins Memorial Scholarship

·   Juniors, Scholarship available for Senior year only

·   Based on financial need

·   Applicant must show a sincere love for the Catholic Central Community while participating in community service or extracurricular activity or sport

·   Must provide at least one letter of recommendation from a priest, teacher, CC faculty

   or community service organization

·   Must be in good standing with no current student or athletic probations

·  Graduating Seniors who will be enrolling in an institution of higher learning upon

Frank & Mary Hernes Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Graduating senior from Catholic Central High School who has been accepted at a two or four year college. The criteria for establishing which student receives the tuition assistance will be assessed by appropriate teaching staff and approved by the principal. Items to be taken into consideration are but not limited to:

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Based on financial need
  • Must perform community service in excess of the minimum hours (at least ten (10) extra hours) as stipulated in the Student Handbook.
  • Must respect authority, obey school rules, work to capacity, and maintain high attendance record.

·         Write a two page essay explaining how the Catholic Education they have received at Catholic Central High School has prepared them for college

Jim Payne Tuition Assistance Fund

  • Eligible candidates are incoming 9th through 12th grade Catholic Central HS students.
  • Financial need is of primary consideration.
  • Candidate must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
  • Eligible candidate must complete a 500 word essay (two pages minimum) describing how they have overcome or are overcoming obstacles or challenges in their personal lives. Why this scholarship will make a positive difference in the quality of their life.
  • One scholarship will be awarded each year.
  • The scholarship will be awarded directly to the students tuition account.
  • The student may reapply for the scholarship if required criteria are met.

Ed and June Prein Family Scholarship Fund

  • Eligible candidates are incoming 9th through 12th grade Catholic Central High School Students.
  • Financial need is of primary consideration.
  • Candidate must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
  • The scholarship will be awarded directly to the students tuition account.
  • The student must respect authority, obey school rules, work to capacity, and maintain a high attendance record.
  • The student must have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math career field (STEM) and write a two page (minimum 250 words essay) that will show how by studying and mastering the STEM academic challenges presented to you today will motivate you to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st Century challenges

The Denny Flak “Conquering Obstacles” Scholarship

·         Eligible candidates are incoming 9th through 12th grade Catholic Central students

·         Financial need is of primary consideration

·         Candidate must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 at time of application

·         Candidate must participate in extracurricular activities

·         Eligible candidate must complete an essay describing how they have overcome or are overcoming or challenges while maintaining their character, integrity and sense of humor.  They should further explain how this award will enable them to continue to meet and overcome challenges they face.  Letters supporting the candidate’s assertions are encouraged but not required.

·         Based on financial need

Joe Lauria Scholarship Fund

·         Must maintain a 3.0 GPA

·         Renewable scholarship – a minimum of one scholarship and a maximum of two may be awarded annually if sufficient spendable dollars are available

·         Open to all grades at Catholic Central

·         Must meet the minimum service hours expectations

·         Based on financial need

·         Family input on the top three applicants
